Professor Ülo Niinemets from the Estonian University of Life Sciences won the recognition of the Ecological Society of Japan
The 58thAnnual Meeting of the Ecological Society of Japan selected the article «A review of light interception in plant stands from leaf to canopy in different plant functional types and in species with varying shade tolerance» by Ülo Niinemets, a professor at the Estonian University of Life Sciences, one of the three best articles published in «Ecological Research» in 2010. In total there were 110 articles to choose from.
The article by Professor Ülo Niinemets «A review of light interception in plant stands from leaf to canopy in different plant functional types and in species with varying shade tolerance» captured lively interest and proved one of the most downloaded articles in «Ecological Research» in 2010.
The article gives an overview of light interception mechanisms in different plant stands with varying shade tolerance. The article is the first to describe a strong correlation between the plant leaf age and the plant’s foliage area index in different Earth ecosystems as well as to explain the reasons behind the variety of light harvesting efficiency and productivity of differently-aged stands.
Ecological Society of Japan was founded in 1949 to coordinate and enhance the development of ecological research. Ecological Society of Japan has entrusted its publication to Springer-Verlag Tokyo, which publishes an ISI journal «Ecological Research» and arranges conferences in ecology in Japan.
