First Certified Veterinary Dermatologist in the Baltics Graduated with Flying Colours
Svetlana Belova, a veterinary doctor and lecturer of dermatology passed her Diploma Examination at the European College of Veterinary Dermatology (ECVD) with flying colours and is now the first to achieve ECVD Diplomate status in veterinary dermatology in the whole Baltic region.
«My studies included a lot of participatory training. We worked in the clinics and examined the patients. We had to work not only with small animals (cats and dogs) but also with exotic animals. Snakes, for example. We had a lot of hands-on experience in treating rare diseases I hadn’t come across in Estonia», said Belova.
To become a board certified veterinary dermatologist, a veterinarian must complete at least two years of postgraduate residency training in an institution accredited by the ECVD, publish original research in the field of animal dermatology, demonstrate superior case management, and pass a comprehensive examination.
After graduation Svetlana Belova intends to continue her work as a lecturer in Estonia. «The experience gained at University of Zurich is priceless. I’m sure I can make extensive use of my knowledge in teaching and working in Estonia. Every ECVD Diplomate has a right to train residents and the competition is really tough there», added Belova.
Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Norway and Russia cannot boast about any certified veterinary dermatologists. There are three of them in Sweden, seven in Switzerland and ten in Germany.
In her studies Svetlana Belova was supported by her family, Estonian University of Life Sciences, Estonian Small Animal Veterinary Association and Archimedes Foundation.
