The treatment options for animals are improving
The Animal Clinic of University of Life Sciences has long been anxious for the pets’ intensive care unit. Although Christmas is not the reason for opening it, it is good that the new rooms of the department are being completed right now. Christmas is hasty time for a both veterinarians in Tartu and in the rest of the world, said Alexandr Semjonov, the professor and head of the clinical department.
“The clinic has provided the round-the-clock treatment in the past. But now there is a place where patients can be treated and monitored in complicated conditions,” said Semjonov. The intensive care department accommodates three bigger dogs and five smaller patients. According to Semjonov, dogs, cats, rabbits and chinchillas can be together in the same rooms and in separate cages, because patients in a difficult situations do not have the slightest interest in other patients.
Concerning the seasonal nature of veterinary care, problems with stomach are most often performing on December 24 and June 24. This is the time when owners give their pets a bit more food. “If the dog goes straight after a large meal to run and play, especially on a slippery ice, these problems are easy to emerge,” said Semjonov. Therefore the clinic doesn’t stop working at Christmas. A department works and the surgeons are ready to help pets.
