Cooperation agreement with the National Central University in Taiwan fosters research and student exchange

On September 24, a delegation from Taiwan visited Estonian University of Life Sciences to sign a memorandum of mutual cooperation for promoting cooperation in research and student exchange.

Cooperation is considered an opportunity for new research projects which encourage researchers in the fields of interest to exchange information, scientific data, technologies and laboratory equipment. The memorandum will provide students with opportunities for an exchange year at the new partner university.

Contacts with National Central University (NCU) in Taiwan began four years ago, when Estonian researchers were offered the opportunity to participate in a visit program between the two countries, said Aive Liibusk, Head of the Chair of Geomatics. "The collaboration between the two universities was fluent from the very beginning," she added.

Dr. Jing-Yang Jou, President of NCU, noted that Taiwan is a small country like Estonia. True, Taiwan has a larger population (23.7 million), but small countries can cooperate effectively, he said. The President gave a brief overview of the methods of geomatics which include space technology. With the help of researchers, it is possible to observe climatic, forestry, construction and several other changes on the ground. Implementation of technologies in the field of land management is also widespread at Estonian University of Life Sciences, he said. Dr. Jing-Yang Jou also noted that he took a walk in Tartu early in the morning and praised the beauty of the city.

Rector Mait Klaassen was delighted that the agreement would widen opportunities for students from both universities to study at the partner university and gain new knowledge and friends. He also noted that one Taiwanese student is already studying at Estonian University of Life Sciences.

NCU was established in Nanjing in 1915. The university ranks among the top 500, and currently about 12,000 students study there.
